Featuring Photographer David R Youngren
David Youngren is a lifelong resident of Hastings and this past year, he has spent many hours in and around our city, capturing its beauty. He is very excited to bring to you this year’s art show and calendar, both of which are themed “Celebrate Hastings.”
David is an accomplished photographer and author. His publication, Our Bend in the River, highlights a four-year journey of capturing spectacular views, most memorable moments, and the modern engineering marvels it took to create the new bridge crossing in Hastings.
In addition, you have likely seen one of his custom creations as you pass over the Hastings Bridge; he is one of two artists who painted the whimsical City of Hastings mural on the external west wall of the former RJ’s Tavern. He also painted a patriotic mural on the inside of the Hastings American Legion that includes our former bridge, Old Blue, and he dedicated it to all those who have served our country.
David and his wife, Valerie have two grown children, Heidi and Lewis, a son-in-law, Trevor, and a grandson, Bennett. He is the owner of Arts Aloft, LLC based in Hastings, MN, which offers guided painting classes. Besides painting and photography, David enjoys spending time with his family, fly fishing, playing guitar and violin, and giving guided tours at the LeDuc Historic Estate in Hastings.
Hastings sees the importance of art and culture in the life of a community, so much so that in 2008 group of citizens formed HPAAC, the Hastings Prescott Area Arts Council. HPAAC introduced events and programs for all types of artists and audiences in both communities.
HPAAC helped organize the River Valley Band. This community concert band practices weekly and performs throughout the year. In a partnership with the Prescott, the group establishment the Orange Dragon Art Gallery. An annual home and garden show, held in July, features gardens, homes, and businesses in Prescott and Hastings. Music concerts featuring all types of music are held throughout the year in private homes and public spaces, such as the new Rotary Pavilion along the Mississippi River
