Lock & Dam #2

Lock and Dam No. 2 is located along the Upper Mississippi River upstream of Hastings, Minnesota. The lock is 110 feet wide by 600 feet long. The dam consists of a concrete structure 722 feet long with 19 Tainter gates, each 30 feet wide.

Initial construction commenced in 1927. Following construction, the original lock walls settled and began to lean out of alignment, so a replacement lock was built and finished in 1948. A rehabilitation phase ran from 1987 to 1995. In 2009, Lock and Dam No. 2 became home to the nation’s first commercial, federally licensed hydrokinetic power facility.

The site includes an observation platform and restrooms open from dawn to dusk every day from April – November.
